Announced back in May and in private beta testing for some time, <tag>Facebook</tag> Connect allows users to harness their <tag>Facebook</tag> credentials and data on participating external websites, then bring those experiences back to the Facebook community, all backed by strict data retention policies and granular privacy controls. It brings the promise of a single sign-on solution and more convenient socialization on the web, and now, any developer or website owner can hop on board.

Announced in a press release, <tag>Facebook</tag> Connect registration is now open to anyone, with sample applications and source code available to help developers get started. The service is designed to solve two distinct problems that have emerged out of a web that has become both more functional and social: how to make it easier for users to bring their identity with them to all these new sites, and the second is how to easily share these experiences with friends, family, and coworkers.

<tag>Facebook</tag> isn't the only organization attempting to tackle these problems, as a number of similar initiatives have appeared. Movements like OpenID, a single sign-on solution that allows a number of companies to serve as identity storehouses, have gained significant support from major industry partners like <tag>Google</tag>, <tag>Yahoo</tag>, and <tag>IBM</tag>. DataPortability is another solution with ambitions on par with Facebook's, as it involves both single sign-on ideals and, as its name suggests, the ability to share one's data like profile information or photo galleries between sites. In recent months, however, OpenID's usability problems have become a hindrance, and many of DataPortability's largest backers, like <tag>MySpace</tag>, have yet to pull the trigger.

Through Facebook Connect's private beta period and for today's launch, the company signed on a healthy batch of major partners for testing such as <tag>CNN</tag>, <tag>MoveOn</tag>, <tag>Hulu</tag>, and <tag>Citysearch</tag>. Facebook's 130 million users can now use their credentials to sign into participating third-party sites and populate their identity with Facebook profile info, but still take advantage of granular privacy controls that can restrict things like profile photos from being viewed by other Facebook Connect users logged into the site. These sites will have to follow the Facebook Connect Policies and Developer Terms of Service that put forth strict rules on things like data retention policies and sign-in usability.

Experiences at these other sites, such as leaving a comment, digging a post, or adding photos to a community, can now be shared back to one's Facebook activity stream much more easily as well, completing the circle of social activity that begins and ends with Facebook. Considering the rampant success of the Facebook Platform and the site's steady growth, you can look for a lot of sites to begin offering Facebook Connect integration very soon.

http://arstechnica.com

BlackBerry Storm

<tag>BlackBerry Storm</tag>

The downside to Facebook

College students focus on <Tag>networking</Tag>, grades, making friends, and having a good time, all while getting involved and staying in touch with friends, and then there's <Tag>Facebook. Facebook</Tag> aids college students in all of their tasks but has its potential downfalls.

Students use Facebook to keep in touch with high school friends and chat with current friends. It also allows them to take breaks from studying.

"Facebook gives me a temporary break from work and allows me to refocus and get back on track," stated Mount Union student Sarah Carlson.

While Facebook has these advantages, it also causes problems for some students and opens them to dangers. These dangers include not getting their work done, not being able to get a job, getting fired from a position or being stalked.

Many times when students sit down at a computer their first instinct is to open their Facebook and see what new notifications they have. Now they can even chat with each other through the social networking system.

"I automatically check my Facebook when I get on a computer. I end up starting my work at least 15 minutes later because I was checking in on people or <Tag>chatting</Tag>," stated Mount Union student, Laura Griffin.

Students also catch themselves wasting more than just 15 minutes. Will Warren said that there have been times when he just sat in his room and on Facebook for nearly an hour, therefore not getting anything else done.

<Tag>Facebook</Tag> also has privacy issues. There are ways to block others or only allow "friends" to see the page. However, sometimes even those "friends" are not people who should have someone else's personal photos.

"I feel like as private as Facebook seems, it really isn't. Once pictures are up anyone has the ability to save them and use them for whatever they want. Unfortunately they then have those pictures forever," Kristin Strah, another Mount Union student said.

Sometimes pictures a person may not even know about end up online. They are then public domain and there is little anyone can do to stop someone from publishing the photos. The photos then get people in trouble with friends, significant others and possibly the law. When pictures from parties are posted many times they depict underage drinking as well as violations of other college policies.

Recently, your reputation isn't the only thing on the line but also you future and your employment. Recruiters and employers have begun to use Facebook and other social networking sites to check up on their potential interviewees.

Information from Yale University showed that many recent graduates had encountered employers checking out their Facebook pages and using their junior employees to access the information.

"I'm not surprised, employers will always be interested to learn as much information about their candidates as they can, and this is just another way for them to do so," Nicole Snyder, associate director for recruitment and employer relations at Princeton University, told a reporter at Yale University.

The numbers of those using <Tag>Facebook</Tag> to screen potential employees is increasing, according to Careerbuilder.com. They found that 22 percent of companies had checked candidates' online networking sites and another 9 percent claimed they were going to in the future.

While 24 percent claimed to have hired someone because of their networking profile, 33 percent said they decided not to give a job offer based on online networking profiles. The 33 percent that denied people jobs said that it was most often because of 'inappropriate' or 'provocative' behavior in photos.

How I Keep Track of Facebook Without Visiting Facebook

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_9Rzrk5ZOi6Q/STO6lrpurzI/AAAAAAAAAGs/mPlAIMeBTO0/s320/facebook+label.jpg" border="0" alt="FACEBOOK"id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5274764745116659506" />
I can’t stand <Tag>Facebook</Tag>. It’s not really anything they did. It’s nothing personal. I just don’t really like going there. It wasn’t as bad before the site redesign, but they managed to do exactly what was necessary to make the interface more annoying and confusing. The redesign does have some redeeming qualities, but mostly it makes my head hurt.

My friends over on FriendFeed actually got me interested in using Facebook again. Not that they all love it or anything, but some of them do use it. After adding them as friends, I found I was actually getting comments on my status messages, people were throwing sheep at me, and I felt kinda bad that I wasn’t engaging them there.

<Tag>Via SMS</Tag>
I use a combination of methods for tracking what’s going on with my FB friends when I’m not there. The first method is via my mobile phone. I don’t have the web or a camera, but I do have text messaging. I went to my Account Settings->Mobile and activated Facebook Mobile. The default settings seem to work just fine.

<Tag>Via IM</Tag>
This part was a little trickier, but only because I had no clue how to do it at first. The solution was Notify.Me and I would have liked to link to the article where I read about it, but my ADD has since pushed that out of my mind for newer and shinier things. Notify.Me is definitely the primary method I use for keeping up…with Facebook.

Once you have signed up for Notify.Me, visit this tutorial on their Wiki. It details how to follow your Notifications and Friends’ Status updates. Depending on your friends, you may not want the status updates feed. It could possibly get annoying.

<Tag>Via Email</Tag>
Facebook recently lost everyone’s email notification settings. I think they did it on purpose to mess with us, but I can’t prove it. I don’t really use email to track things like <Tag>Facebook</Tag> because I don’t live in my email like some people do. I want my Facebook interactions to be immediate and not rely on me checking anything. Some people may find this option useful, though. You can configure this in Account Settings->Notifications.

You can also have Notify.Me send you email alerts if you prefer these over IM alerts.

Conclusion
This is just how I do it and, while I hope this setup works for you out of the box, keep in mind that you have a lot of options here. Play around with what feeds you track and which notification methods you use. If you do decide to tweak things or know of a way to improve this, leave a comment. I’d be interested in hearing about it.

FACEBOOK

<Tag>Microsoft</Tag> is bidding once again for <Tag>Yahoo</Tag>. I don't know anyone who uses <Tag>MSN</Tag>. I know plenty of people who use <Tag>Yahoo</Tag>. Not for search but for other things like finance. <Tag>Yahoo</Tag> has some great stuff, but Jerry never figured out how to best monetize it. If <Tag>Microsoft</Tag> buys it I suspect they'll just screw it up by forcing users to install apps they don't want (i.e., Silverlight) and by creating new and annoying password schemes. <Tag>Microsoft</Tag> does not understand the internet. They never have.

On a different subject, News Corp. made a big mistake buying <Tag>MySpace</Tag>. They should have put in a bid for <Tag>Facebook</Tag> instead. <Tag>MySpace</Tag> is so 2005. Snowflake was on to something when he blogged about posting via his <Tag>smartphone</Tag> while dealing with the consequences of his latest wheat grass shot.

<Tag>RIM</Tag> is integrating <Tag>Facebook</Tag> as a distinct app, rather than a web page. I think a <Tag>smartphone</Tag> player will bid for <Tag>Facebook</Tag>, then license it out to the other vendors. I think it will be <Tag>Apple</Tag>.

Companies like <Tag>Dell</Tag> and <Tag>Toshiba</Tag> and Lenovo are toast. I would include <Tag>HP</Tag> on the toast list, but they do a lot more besides PCs. The internet appliance companies of the future are <Tag>Apple</Tag>, <Tag>Nokia</Tag>, <Tag>LG</Tag>, <Tag>Acer</Tag> and <Tag>RIM</Tag>. Within a few years you'll be connecting your <Tag>smartphone</Tag> to a docking station for monitor and keyboard and you won't have a PC.

Posted by Lou Minatti

Mysterious Facebook Page Loves New Hampshire

Concord – November 21, 2008 – The <Tag>State of New Hampshire</Tag> has a <Tag>Facebook</Tag> page that wasn’t created by the <Tag>State of New Hampshire</Tag>. More than 5,600 people have subscribed as fans to the online <Tag>social-networking</Tag> page. They have used it to opine on the ongoing relevance of the motto “Live Free or Die” and to trade stories about where they were when the Old Man of the Mountain fell.

One debate about the best community in the state had generated 93 entries by yesterday afternoon, with Portsmouth leading but places as small as Gilmanton and Holderness garnering defenders.

Although the site links to the state’s official tourism website - visitnh.gov - it’s not clear who made the page. Officials at the state’s Division of Travel and Tourism said the page isn’t their handiwork, although they may eventually get into the Facebooking business.

Tourism folks say they’ve started using other networking technologies. The state’s public relations firm has created a Twitter account, keeping subscribers instantly updated on the state of foliage or ski conditions. A typical Twitter entry, said Tai Freligh, a spokesman for the division, would be something like: “Today, if you want to see some good foliage go on Route 3 or Route 16.”

The Twitter account has more than 100 subscribers, said E.J. Powers of Montagne Communications, who runs the account. Subscribers, said Freligh, include national news outlets like the Travel Channel and USA Today, along with local residents. But neither man had any idea who was behind the Facebook page, whose author isn’t listed. The page itself, however, appears built for a wide constituency. New Hampshire on Facebook commits itself as a fan of three holidays: Thanksgiving, Hanukkah and Christmas.

The rapid growth of Facebook from a dorm room project in 2004 to one of the most used and popular websites in the world means the convergence of freewheeling college culture, marked by an ironic tone and user-generated spontaneity, with corporate and government officialdom. While a few years ago, all Facebook pages were owned and built by college students, these days many businesses have joined the act.

The state’s tourism branch might eventually get in the <Tag>Facebook</Tag> page, Freligh and Powers said.

“We haven’t activated a live <Tag>Facebook</Tag> page,” Powers said. “Eventually we could perhaps do a <Tag>Facebook</Tag> page, but we want to make sure it makes sense for the end user.”

By Loren R. The group easily attracted more than a million people with <Tag>Facebook</Tag> members joining willingly and spreading the group’s popularity virally to all their <Tag>friends</Tag>. It all looked like an innocent way to express one’s feelings about the <Tag>president</Tag> of the <Tag>US</Tag> but it looks like in some <Tag>countries</Tag> such activity can be viewed as far from innocent and can even result in <Tag>arrest</Tag>.

I have just heard that a man has been <Tag>arrested</Tag> in <Tag>Croatia</Tag> for creating a <Tag>Facebook</Tag> group with a very similar name and a much less ambitious goal. A couple of month ago a guy, Niksa Klecak, created a group called “I bet I can find 5,000 people that hate the <Tag>Prime minister</Tag>“.

The reason for this was in the <Tag>financial</Tag> policy of the current <Tag>Croatia</Tag> government along with its Prime minister. The thing is that in the recent months the <Tag>Croatian</Tag> government headed by the Prime minister Ivo Sanader has been encouraging people in the country to spend less money to better cope with the recession and the world <Tag>financial</Tag> crisis. The head of the country even said publicly that he would not allow the wages in the country to grow.

These ideas have not been popular among the people in the country, obviously, and they started protesting everywhere, including on <Tag>Facebook</Tag> which happens to be the most popular <Tag>social network</Tag> in <Tag>Croatia</Tag>. Basically people said that the ministers should spend less money themselves instead of making people earn (and spend) less. There has even been created a dedicated group on <Tag>Facebook</Tag> intended specifically to demonstrate the government that the ministers should learn to save <Tag>money</Tag> and spend less, not the people of the country.

One of such acts of protest was the group created by Niksa Klecak which currently has over 7,000 people instead of the 5 thousand he wanted to bring in. But the main problem with it was that the guy was not just some regular citizen unhappy with his Prime minister and the financial ideas of the government - he is actually the president of one of the local branches of the youth of SDP (<Tag>social</Tag> democratic party) which is in opposition to the government in <Tag>Croatia</Tag>. And as a member of the political opposition his actions are obviously more noticeable - especially when he chooses a platform like <Tag>Facebook</Tag> to make people hear what he wants to say and easily gets even more people to join him than he initially wanted.

But the result of this situation is simply outrageous as yesterday the guy was <Tag>arrested</Tag> by the <Tag>police</Tag> that claimed he kept some Nazi <Tag>symbols</Tag> and propaganda at home. When they could not find any evidence, they claimed he had links to child <Tag>porn</Tag> somewhere and that could be another reason for the <Tag>arrest</Tag>. Eventually Niksa Klecak was let go by the <Tag>police</Tag> for lack of evidence but the <Tag>social networks</Tag> and the local <Tag>media</Tag> outlets are all abuzz about these actions of the <Tag>police</Tag>.

To people in <Tag>Croatia</Tag> it seems obvious that the guy is persecuted for his loud protests against the government and the Prime minister. In fact, the situation even resulted in a new group created on <Tag>Facebook</Tag> with its name translated like “Break into my place, you Gestapo wannabes. <Tag>Croatia</Tag> isn’t a <Tag>police</Tag> state!” where <Tag>Facebook</Tag> users protest against the prosecution of people unhappy with the policy of the government and the recent measures.

But the most dangerous thing is that it already looks like a trend in <Tag>Croatia</Tag> with a similar situation from a year ago involving a guy who posted <Tag>videos</Tag> with the country’s politicians saying stupid things. And to me it obviously looks like the police in <Tag>Croatia</Tag> have already learned how to track protesters online, <Tag>social networks</Tag> like <Tag>Facebook</Tag> included, and how to <Tag>arrest</Tag> them for any number of dubious reasons only to make people stop complaining online. Honestly, I am not happy about watching <Tag>freedom</Tag> of speech <Tag>violated</Tag> in yet another <Tag>European</Tag> country at all.

by
Svetlana Gladkova,
http://profy.com

Facebook Page experiences

Until 2007, companies that had a presence on <Tag>Facebook</Tag> used <Tag>Facebook</Tag> Groups, to communicate with their “following”. To make a clear distinction between groups that we mostly for fun (like the “I have more foreign policy experience than Sarah Palin Group“) and groups by organizations and companies, <Tag>Facebook</Tag> started offering <Tag>Facebook</Tag> “Pages”, only available for real life companies or brands.

<Tag>Facebook</Tag> Pages offer basically the same functionality as <Tag>Facebook</Tag> Groups, with a few added benefits:

It’s possible to message all “fans” (that’s how group members are called);
Extensive statistics for amount of <Tag>visitors</Tag>, <Tag>fans</Tag>, and much more;
Seamless integration with <Tag>Facebook</Tag> <Tag>Ads</Tag> (I’ll talk about our experience with <Tag>Ads</Tag> in a blog posting coming up soon);
Non-<Tag>Facebook</Tag> group members can also see our <Tag>Facebook</Tag> Page.
Our Barcelona Spotter Sonia Martinez Arguelo took the initiative by starting the predecessing Spotted by Locals Group. After making the decision to start a <Tag>Facebook</Tag> Page, together with Sonia, we shut the Group down in September 2008 and open the Spotted by Locals <Tag>Facebook</Tag> Page.

Without much effort, we now have a following of 128 fans. Most of them are total strangers to me in real life; not Spotters or <Tag>personal</Tag> <Tag>friends</Tag>. We think with a bit more effort, we could do much more to benefit from our <Tag>Facebook</Tag> Page. Before we talk about our plans for the future, a list of positive and negative experiences.

The positive experiences:

<Tag>Setting up</Tag> a <Tag>Facebook</Tag> Page is 5 minutes work.
<Tag>Facebook</Tag> offers a great <Tag>service</Tag> to <Tag>transfer</Tag> you <Tag>facebook</Tag> Group members to your new <Tag>Facebook</Tag> Page (if you do that, shut down your group immediately);
It’s excellent that you can message all fans instantaneously. E.g. we asked all our fans to vote for us at the Open Web Awards;
A <Tag>Facebook</Tag> Page is an excellent way of “viral marketing”. Every time a fan interacts on our <Tag>Facebook</Tag> Page, this is mentioned on our fan’s Pagebook feed. Curious <Tag>Facebook</Tag> friends will visit our <Tag>Facebook</Tag> page, and may sign up as a fan too. One fan can achieve a very big snowball-effect. With 120 million users, the sky is the limit!
The negative experiences:

Many of the “<Tag>Applications</Tag>” that work for <Tag>Facebook</Tag> Groups and <Tag>Profiles</Tag>, don’t work for <Tag>Facebook</Tag> Pages. The <Tag>applications</Tag> that are available for <Tag>Facebook</Tag> Pages don’t offer the the options we’d like to engage our fans;
It would be nice if you could message a selection of your fans;
The URL bothers me. Why not facebook.com/spottedbylocals instead of http://www.facebook.com/pages/Spotted-by-Locals/63018535692?
Our plans for the future
Of course there’s much more to be done than just setting up a page. Our objective is to get a large following of fans, that we keep interested in our cityblogs and our company, by offering them relevant information and updates, the <Tag>opportunity</Tag> to discuss things, and some nice goodies.

So far, we haven’t done very well in engaging our fans. There is a lots of room for improvement. Soon, we’ll <Tag>add</Tag> a few <Tag>new</Tag> functionalities and interesting <Tag>tools</Tag>, just for our fans! Stay tuned, and join as as a fan to find out about the <Tag>new</Tag> <Tag>features</Tag> we’re going to <Tag>offer</Tag>!

By: Bart van Poll
oppression and terrorism.

Drawing inspiration from a movement against FARC rebels in <tag>Colombia</tag>, the State Department is joining forces with <tag>Facebook</tag>, <tag>Google</tag>, <tag>MTV</tag>, Howcast and others in <tag>New York</tag> City next week to get the "ball rolling."

It said 17 groups from <tag>South Africa</tag>, <tag>Britain</tag> and the <tag>Middle East</tag> which have an online presence like the "Million Voices Against the FARC" will attend a conference at <tag>Columbia</tag> University Law School from December 3-5.

Observers from seven organizations that do not have an online presence -- such as groups from <tag>Iraq</tag> and <tag>Afghanistan</tag> -- will attend. There will also be remote participants from <tag>Cuba</tag>.

They will forge an "Alliance of Youth Movement," said James Glassman, under secretary of state for public diplomacy.

"The idea is put all these people together, share best practices, produce a manual that will be accessible online and in print to any group that wants to build a youth empowerment organization to push back against violence and oppression around the world," he told reporters.

The conference will be streamed by <tag>MTV</tag> and Howcast, he said.

The list of organizations due to attend include the <tag>Burma Global Action Network</tag>, a human rights movement spurred into action by the ruling junta's crackdown on monks and other pro-democracy protesters last year.

There is also <tag>Shabab</tag> 6 of April, which has emerged as <tag>Egypt</tag>'s largest pro-democracy youth group, and Invisible Children, which spotlights atrocities committed by the <tag>Lord</tag>'s Resistance <tag>Army</tag> in <tag>Uganda</tag>, Glassman said.

Others include Fight Back, which fights <tag>domestic violence</tag> in <tag>India</tag>, the Save Darfur Coalition, as well as One Million Voices Against Crime in South <tag>Africa</tag>, said Jared Cohen, from the secretary's policy planning staff.

Also attending will be <tag>People</tag>'s March Against Knife Crime from <tag>Britain</tag> and Young Civilians from Turkey.

Cohen said Young Civilians is a human rights and pro-democracy organization which works online but has brought thousands of protesters into the streets of Turkey.

Glassman said the State Department is providing about 50,000 dollars in order to help bring delegates from the groups to the <tag>United States</tag>.

Among the speakers will be actress <tag>Whoopi Goldberg</tag> and a co-founder of <tag>Facebook</tag>.

Courtesy of http://www.globalresearch.ca/

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://facebookhow2.blogspot.com/2008/11/us-government-taps-facebook-google-mtv.html' title='U.S. government taps <tag>Facebook</tag>, Google, <tag>MTV</tag>
